Aims and Ambitions
This charity has been founded for the advancement and promotion of steel pans.
With the Festival of Britain, the arrival of the Windrush steelpan players, and the Section 11 grant from a government act of the 1960s, use of pans at carnivals, general events and in education blossomed in the United Kingdom. But over the last decade steelpans at carnival and in schools, especially in the north of England has declined. This charity is designed to combat this decline. We aim to do this by:

  1. Setting up community classes in various localities, initially in Leeds, and run both tasters and regular classes, using steel pans and mixed percussion.
  2. Operating a system of pay as you feel.
  3. Employing trained teachers who can teach inclusively, by recognising individuals’ learning styles and any particular needs.
  4. Training new tutors and developing accreditation.
  5. Supporting students in purchase and tuning of steelpans, and advising as to care of the instruments.
  6. Over time these classes will form into steel bands, and we will develop performance skills and find suitable events to play at, including performances at Caribbean carnivals.
